I also visited with Cenicana the Columbia research and extension body. They lead the world in some areas of research, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The Columbian Industry has developed a unique approach to burning sugar cane. The industry has 18 meteorological stations across the cane growing region and the producers must access the web site linked to these prior to firing cane. Based on wind direction, wind speed and inversion layers the site will inform the grower whether they can burn or not.
The board of BSI have now advertised and accepted version 3 as the standard for the production of sugar and ethanol from sugar cane. The standards are on the BSI web site bettersugarcane.com.
BSI have been working through ISEAL, the international group who have developed a protocol to verify standards for industry.
The standards have been on the website for comment at each stage of development for a total of 120 days. It is unfortunate that those who have been the biggest detractors of BSI have not taken the time to comment or make suggestions.
