Herbert November 2011
Final crushing in the Herbert finished at the end of October. During the final days of the crush, on 27 Oct, rain fell, with some areas receiving 250mm, other areas 160mm and some areas receiving very little at all. The Herbert mills crushed 2.906 million tonnes at 12.96 CCS.
Rats are a huge problem this year, along with feral pigs. We have to be ever vigilant at trying to keep these pests under control. Weeds are also going to be a problem after the rains we have had.
Around our homes this year we are seeing weeds that we haven’t seen in our yards before, so it is an ongoing battle to beat this problem. The seeds seem to have blown in courtesy of Cyclone Yasi!
The native birds are doing it tough because there are few flowers to feed on. We have had cassowary sightings around farms because their habitat and food sources have been destroyed, so these birds are in pitiful condition. This cyclone has certainly been cruel. Looking forward to a much better year in 2012!
