A GROUP of kids is suspected to have lit a fire that ravaged a sugarcane paddock in Edmonton this afternoon.
Residents on Logomeir Rd were evacuated and roads in the area shutdown for hours as multiple fire crews battled the 20ha fire.
Nearby resident Terry Ingledew called the firefighters after his wife saw several kids light the fire before 3pm.
He said the fire was “roaring” and wind was “howling”.
“We were bit concerned because the flames were getting pretty high,” he said.
“It was very nasty and that is why we rang the fireys straight away.”
Police could not confirm if they were investigating the alleged arson.
Fire fighters conducted back burning and the fire was under control before 6pm.
In a separate incident, police and fire fighters were called to a deliberately lit fire on Mill St in Gordonvale about 5.30pm.
EARLIER: EDMONTON residents have been urged to close windows and doors as a large bushfire sends thick smoke across the suburb this afternoon.
Police are investigating whether the fire was caused by arson after witnesses reported seeing a group of youths light the fire.
Multiple Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews are on scene at the blaze burning in a sugarcane paddock near Mallicoola Cres and Logomeir Rd.
Residents may be affected by smoke throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene before 3pm today.
About 50 acres is on fire. The cause is unknown at this stage.
Residents are advised to keep medications close by if suffering from a respiratory condition.
Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions.
