The constant wet has placed extreme pressure on young cane. It is hoped that the large stand-over crop can make up the difference in 2011.
Farmers are enjoying the first break in the weather for quite a while which has given a small window to do much needed spraying and fertilising. Late harvested ratoons aren’t fairing too well. It is hoped that the dry will allow them to recover. The promising new variety Q208 has been particularly affected. Early cut blocks are in better shape.
The decision to close Plane Creek’s crushing season was made on Wednesday 1 December, after it was determined there was little prospect of sufficient cane supply becoming available to enable Plane Creek Mill to resume crushing again, due to the persistent wet weather.
