Australian Cane Farmers Association (ACFA) Southern Queensland Director, Michael Hetherington, has today confirmed his support for the proposed Local Water Management (LWM) scheme in the Bundaberg/Isis Region.
Information meetings held this week by the Local Interim Board for Bundaberg/Isis Irrigation scheme saw farmers receive a voting form in which they must return ASAP.
“I will be voting ‘YES’ as this is our opportunity to own and manage our irrigation network,” says Mr. Hetherington.
“Decisions about assets, operation and channel water prices would be made locally, instead of in an office in Brisbane.
“The Bundaberg/Isis water distribution system has been underutilised for years; this is our opportunity to change this to improve efficiency and to ensure the long term sustainability of irrigation services in our area.”
Mr. Hetherington also spoke about what is would mean if the scheme did not receive sufficient support from local farmers.
“If the LWM does not go ahead, the consequences could be severe,” says Mr. Hetherington.
“The alternative could mean a very uncertain future in terms of distribution and pricing.”
Michael’s message to farmers is clear, “Get your vote in! A decision has to be made, and it is important that everyone involved has their say.”
If the proposal is approved it would mean local customers taking control of the region’s water distribution system from the current network manager, government-owned SunWater.
